How to Fit Metal Segs — Step by Step
Fitting segs at home is straightforward with the right tools. Here's how to do it:
What You'll Need
- Metal segs (heel and/or toe)
- A hammer
- A nail punch or bradawl (to start the nail holes)
- A last or hard surface to work on
Step 1: Position the Seg
Place the seg on the heel corner or toe of the shoe where the wear is occurring. The seg should sit flush against the sole edge. For heel segs, position them at the back corner — this is where the most impact happens with each step.
Step 2: Mark the Nail Holes
Use a bradawl or nail punch to mark the nail positions through the holes in the seg. This prevents the sole from splitting when you hammer in the nails.
Step 3: Hammer in the Nails
Place the shoe on a firm surface (a cobbler's last is ideal, but a hard floor works too). Hammer the nails through the seg and into the sole firmly. Make sure the seg sits completely flat — any raised edges will catch on floors.
Step 4: Clench the Nails (if needed)
If the nails come through the inside of the sole, use a nail punch to bend them flat (clench them) so they don't irritate your foot. Many modern segs use short nails that don't penetrate through.
Step 5: Check the Fit
Run your finger around the edge of the seg to make sure it's flush. Walk on a hard surface to check it feels comfortable and secure.
How Long Do Metal Segs Last?
A good set of metal segs can last anywhere from 6 months to several years depending on how much you walk and on what surfaces. When they do wear down, simply remove the old ones and fit a new set — your sole underneath will still be in great condition.
