How to Fit Steel Shanks in Women's High Heel Shoes
Steel shanks are a traditional shoemaking component fitted between the heel and ball of the foot to support the arch and give high heel footwear its structure and rigidity. Without a shank, a high heel shoe will flex and collapse under the weight of the foot over time.

What You'll Need
- Curved steel shank (5 inch, 12mm wide — for 1.5 to 2 inch heel heights)
- Shoe last or shoe form
- Contact adhesive or lasting tacks
- Insole board
- Sock lining or insole cover material
Step-by-Step Fitting Guide
Step 1 — Prepare the Insole Board
Ensure the insole board is lasted and secured to the last before fitting the shank.

Step 2 — Position the Shank
Place the shank between the heel seat and the ball of the foot, just below the arch.
Step 3 — Check the Arch Alignment
The curved profile should follow the natural arch of the insole, with the raised curve facing upward toward the foot.
Step 4 — Secure the Shank
Apply contact adhesive to both the shank and insole board. Allow to become tacky, then press firmly into position. Alternatively, tack through the shank holes if present.
Step 5 — Allow to Dry
Leave the adhesive to cure fully before continuing work.
Step 6 — Cover with Sock Lining
Apply the sock lining or insole cover material over the shank as normal to complete the insole.
Tips from the Workshop
- Always dry-fit the shank before gluing to confirm correct positioning
- Minor surface rust on vintage shanks is cosmetic only and does not affect performance
- For heel heights above 2 inches, consider a longer or stiffer shank for additional support
